Ingredients

  • 8 slices sandwich bread ciabatta rolls, or hoagie rolls
  • 12 ounces sliced roast beef
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons deli mustard
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish optional
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 small red onion thinly sliced
  • 1 cup arugula or lettuce
  • 1 large tomato sliced
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise or sandwich sauce for serving optional

Equipment

  • 1 Small mixing bowl
  • 2 knife
  • 3 Cutting board
  • 4 Skillet, optional

Method

  1. In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, deli mustard, and horseradish if using.
  2. Spread the sauce on one side of each bread slice or inside each roll.
  3. Layer the roast beef with black pepper and garlic powder.
  4. Add provolone cheese over the roast beef.
  5. For a hot sandwich, melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat and warm the sandwiches for 2 to 3 minutes per side until the bread is lightly crisp and the cheese melts.
  6. For a cold sandwich, skip the skillet and continue assembling with the remaining ingredients.
  7. Add the onion, tomato, and arugula or lettuce.
  8. Close the sandwiches, slice if desired, and serve right away.

Notes

  • Use thinly sliced deli roast beef for the easiest texture and best layering.
  • Hoagie rolls give a more classic deli-style result, but sandwich bread works well for a quick lunch.
  • Add extra sauce if you want a creamier sandwich.
  • You can serve this recipe hot for a melty sandwich or cold for a faster option.1
